Research Projects

Our research projects deal with experimental implementations of optical quantum memories in solids and cold atoms, as well as nonlinear optical frequency conversion and spectroscopy.

Light storage in doped solids

We implement optical memories for single photons (quantum memories) in solid-state systems – which offer robustness, scalability and the option to integrate them in larger architectures. Such quantum memories are a key component of optical quantum information processors and networks. To implement the memories we develop and apply methods to stop and store light pulses.

Nonlinear optical spectroscopy and imaging

We apply nonlinear optical frequency conversion processes to detect molecular species with large selectivity (e.g., via molecular "finger print" resonances in the mid-infrared) and to image heterogeneous samples. The techniques provide directed signal at low detection limits to monitor also small amounts of molecules and permit applications in robust environments.

Coherent nonlinear optics

Frequency conversion is at the heart of many research efforts in laser-based science, e.g. to extend the accessible wavelength range of coherent light sources. We investigate coherent light-matter interactions to enhance the nonlinear optical response of quantum systems and improve frequency conversion processes in atomic gases, driven by ultra-fast laser pulses towards the extreme-ultraviolet (XUV).

Light-matter interfaces using hollow-core fibers

We explore ultracold atoms interfaced with hollow-core fibers as an experimental platform for quantum optical experiments. Due to the enhanced light-matter coupling inside such fiber, efficient storage & retrieval of photons as well as generation of stationary light is possible. Furthermore, nonlinear optical effects can be driven efficiently at very low power, enabling, e.g., the generation of nonclassical photon pairs.
