PhD position in Experimental Quantum Optics / Nonlinear Optics

Our research team at the Technical University of Darmstadt (Germany), dealing with Experimental Quantum Optics, is offering a position for a doctoral student for a period of up to three years starting by July 2019. The PhD project is funded by a European Union Innovative Training Network (ITN) and provides an attractive salary.  Due to the specific EU funding regulations, the position is reserved for international (i.e. foreign, non-German) candidates, who have not spent more than 12 months in Germany within the past 3 years.

Project description:

The project is embedded in the MSCA ITN “Light-Matter Interfaces for Quantum Enhanced Technology”. The research will be dealing with coherent light-matter interactions in laser-cooled atoms confined within a hollow-core fiber [1]. The goal is to achieve efficient nonlinear optical interactions at the few-photon level for future quantum technologies using stationary light pulses (SLPs) in waveguide-coupled laser-cooled atoms. SLPs, i.e., light pulses with vanishing group velocity, are based on the effect of electromagnetically induced transparency and are promising candidates to achieve such nonlinear interactions even at the single-photon level. Recently, our team succeeded in observing SLPs in such a hollow-core fiber setup for the first time [2] and even down to the single-photon level [3].

Our team (with roughly 20 coworkers) at the Institute of Applied Physics at the Technical University of Darmstadt offers a research environment of international reputation and modern, very well-equipped state-of-the-art laser laboratories, embedded in strong national and international collaborations. Substantial funding for experimental equipment is available.

The Technical University of Darmstadt with approx. 20.000 students (among them 20 % foreign students) is one of the oldest and among the most renowned technical universities in Germany. Darmstadt is embedded in an attractive landscape of woodlands, and located in the region around Frankfurt (also close to Frankfurt international airport), i.e. one of the economically strongest regions of Germany and Europe.

 

Application requirements:

Essential:

  • solid and broad education in modern physics with some specialization in experimental atomic and/or optical physics
  • MSc university degree in Physics with excellent marks obtained within the last four years
  • high level of motivation
  • very good writing and oral skills in English

Desirable:

  • experience with laser-cooling of neutral atoms and/or coherent light-matter interactions
  • programming skills
  • pronounced communication as well as management skills
  • ability to work collaboratively
